This issue most likely has nothing to do with "uid/gid mappings not working"
as you state. Here virtiofsd failed to start, and hence qemu can't connect
to it.

But removing the mapping config in virt-manager allows it to start...?

Please note virtiofsd definitely works, as demonstrated by the new autopkgtest
(which doesn't work on buildds still, due to other reasons, but works in salsa).

I need the command line used to start virtiofsd, and its (error) messages.

From a running VM with the old working 1.10 build, I can see this in the process list:

simon 390398 0.0 0.0 6512 3940 ? S 13:37 0:00 /usr/libexec/virtiofsd --fd=34 -o source=/ssd/shared --uid-map=:0:501:1: --uid-map=:501:501:1: --gid-map=:0:501:1: --gid-map=:501:501:1:

Is that syntax perhaps no longer valid for the rust version?

Seems unlikely that virtiofsd and libvirt could get out of sync with each other to the level of introducing breaking changes.

Regards.
