I fixed this locally for dpkg after Niels mentioned it, and I've not just pushed the change to dpkg's git: https://git.dpkg.org/cgit/dpkg/dpkg.git/commit/?id=8b37608eae29018ce88c8f1f9021f914c5f99bdc Will be part of dpkg 1.22.12.
