Hello Colin,feel free to work on mkdocs, I'm still in the process of moving my home and wont have time and energy to look into mkdocs seriously the next weeks.
I haven't really looked into the old (current) -doc package while trying to work on 1.6.0, if the reason for the broken links isclear and somehow also existing in the current -doc package then yes, this isn't a blocking issue and can be fixed also later.
