What exactly have you measured?
I've measured that -j2 is already too much on a system with 16GB of RAM and 4 GB of swap, as I was getting build failures due to processes being killed in such scenario. Your suggestion to use -j2 on a machine with only 8GB of RAM does not seem to be compatible with that (I'm assuming here a similar RAM usage pattern across different architectures, but that may or may not be accurate). So let's see what Jerome has to say about this. Thanks.
