One minor correction to my original submittal is the proper path to the faulty script that hoses fonts.dir and fonts.scale is:
/var/lib/defoma/scripts/x-ttcidfont-conf.defoma
again which is called when `update-app defoma` is called from defoma-reconfigure -arias
