I started getting it on a real system in production a couple days ago,
and it’s only thanks to this bug report that I finally understand what
is going on.

Said system is a real Debian Bookworm + backports + fasttrack, running
in LXC.

Please don’t, especially if a fix could be done without a massive
amount of work.

Please consider that not everyone runs systemd as their init system.
While in practice many maintainers only care about systemd, reliable
cron jobs help a lot when they can be maintained without too much
effort.
