Hello,
after waiting for a fix for #1072004, I finally got around to trying
to again use the autopkgtest QEMU/KVM backend with a VM image generated
by mmdebstrap-autopkgtest-build-qemu .
The previously generated image (upgraded with
'sbuild-qemu-update --boot=efi unstable-autopkgtest-amd64.img') failed.
I tried with a freshly generated image:
$ cd /dev/shm
$ TMPDIR=/dev/shm mmdebstrap-autopkgtest-build-qemu \
--size=25G --boot=efi sid unstable-autopkgtest-amd64.img
$ mv -i unstable-autopkgtest-amd64.img ~/.cache/sbuild/
but it also fails.
What fails is the manual run of autopkgtest:
$ SRCPKG=srcpkg_x.y.z-r
$ autopkgtest --output-dir ./${SRCPKG}_autopkgtest.out \
--summary ./${SRCPKG}_autopkgtest.summary \
--apt-upgrade \
-B ./${SRCPKG}_amd64.changes -- \

After some wait, the process times out:

What's going on?
Is mmdebstrap-autopkgtest-build-qemu failing to insert something needed
by autopkgtest (or by the newer Linux kernel)?
Or is autopkgtest failing to do something needed?
Please also take bug [#1077620] into account (where the VM image was
generated with autopkgtest-build-qemu): if the issue is in autopkgtest,
please reassign and merge.
