The web application uses JavaScript to establish real-time communication between the browser and your phone, as well as managing the interface and loading dynamic content. If JavaScript is disabled, the site will not load or function as expected. IMO, there is no requirement for the "other side" to be released under a free DFSG license to be in Debian (main), if that were a requirement, it would mean that more people would have to use contrib/non-free.
