Came up with a reasonable design for this.. Let /etc/debconf_aliaes be a file like this:
fb debian-installer/framebuffer url preseed/url locale debian-installer/locale interface netcfg/choose_interface Etc. Only include things users typically enter at the command line, including for preseeded installs. Add some special magic for booleans so that "nofb" works and you don't need to say "=true" for them. Now this just needs to be implemented, probably in preseed these days.. -- see shy jo
