If unattended-upgrades is upgrading packages one at the time (it seems like it) then lower layers can't properly order packages. In that case unattended-upgrades should be responsible for proper ordering.
I'm new to unattended-upgrades, but the configuration has this: // Split the upgrade into the smallest possible chunks so that // they can be interrupted with SIGTERM. This makes the upgrade // a bit slower but it has the benefit that shutdown while a upgrade // is running is possible (with a small delay) //Unattended-Upgrade::MinimalSteps "true";
So, I believe that if you have: 1) dkms based packages 2) don't configure unattended-upgrades to only run before shutdown you should turn this to false. Disclaimer: I just interpret this from reading the configuration file ( /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/50unattended-upgrades) Paul
