Here they show not just in black, but they make the Firefox window transparent, so I can see the terminal underneath through the "hole".

Confirmed with firefox 130 on sid. The suggested workaround to disable AVIF support works, images are correctly rendered after a reload. For reference, the setting is image.avif.enabled.
