/lib/dracut/dracut-functions pe_file_format uses gawk. This file's source in the current package version is https://github.com/dracut-ng/dracut-ng/blob/103/dracut-functions.sh#L1061. In debian, the file is packaged into dracut-core and installed at /lib/dracut/dracut-functions. dracut-core, as of version 103-1.1, does not express a dependency on gawk. I did find https://salsa.debian.org/debian/dracut/-/merge_requests/29 introduced by a dracut project member on 2023-11-03.
