Looking at version control I see there was a python-numpy-ext that was
transitional even at the start of the git history in 2007. Is that what
you're referring to? I don't see any other such packages in version
control.

I'm currently implementing the split, to see what that would look like,
and to confirm that it would solve the issues I'd like it to solve.
Would it be true to say that you're planning to push numpy 2.0 into
Debian soon-ish? If so, it would be good to do this package split (if we
proceed with that) at the same time.

So I'm experimenting on my local machine, and when I get something
that's functoinal, I'll report back here to talk about merging.
