Hi,

thanks for the extra information. Especially the history.log contains
most of the versions at play. I have given it some attempts to reproduce
the problem (in particular going to bookworm, upgrading to your dpkg
version and then completing the dist upgrade to unstable), but I was
entirely unsuccessful reproducing the failure thus far. I must be
missing something relevant still. I need to attempt reproducing your
full package set next, but cannot do so right now.

If you happen to have a backup, you may support us by try to narrow a
reproducer yourself. Consider extracting to a directory, removing as
many packages as possible (without removing essential ones), taking a
copy of the resulting tree (without user data such as /home or /etc) and
reperforming the failed upgrade. If that happens to error out, handing
us the said tree (privately) would help.

Other than that my questions about filesystems and how / looked before
the upgrade could also provide important clues to reproduce.

Thank you

Helmut
