Thank you (everyone in this discussion) for enduring my frustration.

That section in the Developer's Reference does seem clear. Certainly
clearer than I recall from a few years ago.

I'll spend some time with it, and try to purge my mind of outdated ad hoc
half-remembered policies :-)
