debian/watch is broken. gitlab access to the tarballs is confusing, and I wasn't able to find a simple fix for debian/watch But gbp import-orig can use the tarball link directly without --uscan gbp import-orig https://gitlab.com/ase/ase/-/archive/3.23.0/ase-3.23.0.tar.bz2 --pristine-tar
