This sounds like a case for debconf. A lot of Debian users do *not*
run KDE but FVWM, ion3, fluxbox, wmaker, or not even X. If on those,
the power button is accidentally pressed, you *will* lose data.

There have been times where you always lost data when pressing
the power button. But ...

Please use debconf to find out whether the user wants your default
behaviour, or rather not.

Another thing to do would be to pop up a confirmation dialog (which
is what OS X and WinXp do). If you can find a way to make that work
with and without X across all window managers, that would be very
acceptable, I think.

I'm removing the scripts - or better: I've really not time currently, lets RFA.
