Thanks for asking.

Unless the procedure below isn't what you had in
mind, no.

For what it's worth, it seems to me that firefox's

    Edit->Preferences->Downloads->View & Edit Actions

window should have an "add" button that either

    allows users to manually add entries or 
    
    at least directs them to try downloading a
    file and choosing an application to start it
    with.

Here's how I tried to add:

1.) Point firefox at http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/multimedia/sun-sounds/

2.) Left click on sunsite.au

3.) Choose to open it with /usr/bin/play

4.) (The audio file is played)

5.) Clean up downloads

6.) Restart firefox

7.) Edit->Preferences->Downloads->View & Edit Actions

8.) See no new entry for .au or /usr/bin/play.
