It is my opinion that an appropriate line should be added to inetd.conf to simplify configuration. Users don't want to spend time doing things apt could to, and that has to be done with a package every time it is installed.
Should I try providing a patch to help solving this bug?
Sure, patches are always welcome. The reason why non initd-configuration was done until now is, that it the configuration should not depend on one certain initd, but do some autodetection or whatever to work with all of the several initd packages.
