I don't use a window manager: vncviewer is executed fullscreen as the
only X client from my .xinitrc file.

I still have xfree86. The problem could be that when I switch to the
virtual console, the modifier is released there, and the X event is
sent only when I switch back to the X server. I don't know if this is
what really happens, but this could explain the problem.

Also, when I switch to the console, the system thinks that the Meta
key is pressed. See bug #190751, and I currently get it with a 2.6.12
kernel. I don't know if this is related to the above problem, though.
