Well, just a guess, but perhaps an ugly workaround could be to move the
file out of dh_md5sums sight and re-name it back later?
Btw... the Debian policy (which is referred by #361038, which, in turn,
lead to the exclusion of the README file) doesn't state "you must not"
but rather just "you don't need to", i.e. "you are not forced to" :)
Exclusion of the original package's README file puts you in the
unpleasant position to check it's contents with each new upstream
version, to see if it's still candidate for exclusion. You can imagine
what that will lead to in the future :) I wouldn't let me put there if
I were you - I'm not you, however :)
