btw: /var/local is still :staff owned ... while /usr/local is no longer. Is that on purpose?
Historical reasons. There was also a time in which, by default, /usr/local was also root:staff and writeable by staff. The /var/local thing is already reported here: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1039973 Thanks.
