I tried to reproduce this by killing a debfoster process that was
sitting on a "do you want to keep FOO" prompt, and was not successful.

Is there any way to reproduce this without deliberately crashing an X
session?

Asides from that, I agree that debfoster should write new keepers to a
tempfile.
