Cannot you make it ttf-bitstream-vera|ttf-dejavu , please? I cannot use ttf-bitstream-vera, because it doesn't support Eastern European languages. There is a free (and part of Debian) extension of the original Bitstream Vera font DeJaVu (http://dejavu.sourceforge.net), which provides very high quality fonts including many non-Western (and non-European) glyphs.
