... but it would be better if this override were done by assigning EXEEXT on the configure line, not by assigning ac_cv_exeext. Of course I'm against any change to this fragile code before the release, but I think that the current hack should not be documented. Thus I propose to remove a tiny fraction of Ralf's work, see the attached patch. (I apologize that I haven't noticed it earlier.)
