if .config is the future, then i wish not to stand in its way. my point was that as a unix nerd for 4 years now, this convention was completely unfamilar and alien to me, and thus unfamiliar to the many. in fact, it appears to be an xfce-only convention. should you not be pushing this convention as debian policy so that there are not two disparate config setting approaches, one of which almost all users have never been exposed to?
