In fact, arctica-greeter requires mate-settings-daemon for some features. It might be an idea to make this optional (or remove it entirely as done in slick-greeter). See https://github.com/ArcticaProject/arctica-greeter/issues/12Just for the record, I just tested arctica.greeter on a system with mate-settings-daemon removed. It fails to start then. We'll see if I can make m-s-d optional or not (with my upstream hat on).
The plumbing of mate-settings-daemon into arctica-greeter (formerly gnome-settings-daemon) is so invasive, ripping it out is not possible without a considerable amount of effort.
