I think the proper way to have 16 color support is to use the 'background' colors for output but in bold, so the darker version. On terminals with a black background there should be a setting to have these bold colors shown as the bright variants. This way the color is supported on both backgrounds and one can still use a back and foreground combination from the darker and brighter colors for e.g. status bars etc. Kind regards, Axel
