A possible obstacle with that approach: the libreoffice code invokes the
additional API function to implements this when _not_ configured[1] to use the
system-provided clucene.

That is not really a reason, though. I am happy to patch it to make it
work (and build-depend on a matching clucene-core).
AFAICS this doesn't require a runtime dependency here since it writes
some other value to a field at generation time, which is read anyway in
the unpatched version even.
Actually back then when Thorsten proposed it first I said "please make
it a configure check"...
