Package: libesd-alsa0
Version: 0.2.35-2
Followup-For: Bug #283814

I also have similar problems. I am using onboard CMedia sound with the
following lspci output:

0000:00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corp. 82801EB/ER
(ICH5/ICH5R) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 02)

0000:00:1f.5 0401: 8086:24d5 (rev 02)

It has been working adequately using the i810_audio OSS module and libesd0.
Today I switched to using the alsa modules (snd-intel8x0) and to
libesd-alsa0. Sounds that play through esd have some sort of noisy
interference and I have also found that mp3's played through xmms with the
esd plugin seem to play slightly sped up (faster and higher pitch).

If esd is not loaded I can play sounds perfectly with aplay and with
either the OSS or ALSA output modules for xmms.

If I load esd($ esd&) , sounds played either through esdplay or xmms
with the esd output plugin sound noisy and interrupted.

If I load esd with -d hw as mentioned by the reporter of this bug
($ esd -d hw&) then sounds played with esdplay and the xmms esd output
plugin play perfectly.

Therefore I have added "-d hw" to the default_options section of my
/etc/esound/esd.conf file as a work around.

I know that my CMedia onboard sound is pretty rubbish and it only accepts
48000kHz audio and it doesn't even have a proper hardware volume control.

Because of this and the fact that MP3s play faster (which I suspect is
due to them being rendered at 44kHz but then being played back at 48kHz)
I think esd is getting confused about sample rates. I am not sure why the
"-d hw" option makes a difference though!
