Well yes, of course. My patch was an attempt as a small patch to resolve
the (symptoms of) the reported bug, not a reworking of the whole
package. The maintainer can decide how they want to handle it (I do not
intend to NMU with this patch atm).

The comment was really intended for the maintainer.
I took the liberty to upload a NMU with your patch because this bug
caused other packages to FTBFS.
Bill, I appreciate you taking over this package, and for your reasonable
