This is due to a misconfiguration of your font paths.

Could you please:

1) Ensure that the `xorg' metapackage (and all its deps) is installed;

Yup.

3) Make sure that the xfonts-75dpi and xfonts-100dpi packages are
  installed;

Yup.

4) Check that /usr/lib/X11/fonts is a symlink to /usr/share/fonts/X11;

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ stat /usr/lib/X11/fonts
  File: `/usr/lib/X11/fonts' -> `../../X11R6/lib/X11/fonts'

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ stat /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts
  File: `/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts'

So it's not a symlink there.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ls -l /usr/share/fonts/X11/
total 52

2) Try installing xfs and see if it changes anything;

I was hoping to test this without restarting X, so if you ask me to do it again, I will; perhaps the above information is enough to know more.
