What does you mean with ":set"?
Syntax got enabled executing ":syntax on", have you tried that?

Beside that, syntax highlighting is disabled in deafult debian
configuration so, unless you changed your configuration files
(personally and system-wide) it is normal for it not to work. Still,
enabling it as above should give you working syntax highlighting.

Yep, another question: are you running vim as "vim" or as "vi"?o
