It says "Using password: YES" although you did not specify a login password
on the command line so I guess that you maybe have one in /root/.my.cnf
which does not work?

Eh, well, that's it. You can't say mysql to use a root password *before*
you actually set it. Move /root/.my.cnf away, then set the password and then
feel free to use it :)

BTW: You only need [client], mysql and mysqladmin both also parse them, IIRC.
