Package: po-debconf
Severity: normal

hi,

i've been working on a QA upload lately. Lintian keeps on complainig
about wrong template files (If the short description does not end with a
colon), so i wanted to get rid of the Lintian warnings.

Well, lets note thats more or less the first time im updating a original
templates file, so if im doing something wrong please enlighten me..

Heres what i did:

 1) Changing the Description field of the original debian/templates file
    the following way:

  [..]
    Type: string
-_Description: Which serial device is the X-10 CP-290 controller connected
to?
    +_Description: Serial device:
+ Which serial device is the X-10 CP-290 controller connected to?
    + .
If you have an X-10 CP-290 controller connected to your system, you can
  [..]

 2) running debconf-updatepo which does happily merge the new changes
into the existing pofiles (example is from po/cs.po):

  [..]
     msgid ""
     msgstr ""
     "Project-Id-Version: x10\n"
    -"Report-Msgid-Bugs-To: \n"
    -"POT-Creation-Date: 2005-04-26 14:22+0200\n"
    +"Report-Msgid-Bugs-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]"
    +"POT-Creation-Date: 2006-05-18 00:19+0200\n"
     "PO-Revision-Date: 2005-06-18 14:13+0200\n"

 3) Now, running po2debconf only ends up with a template file which does
not include one of the other translations:

    [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/x10/x10-1.06/debian$ po2debconf -v templates
NOTICE: ./po/sv.po is not in UTF-8 but iso-8859-1, converting...

    Template: x10/device
    Type: string
    Description: Serial:
Which serial device is the X-10 CP-290 controller connected to?
     .
If you have an X-10 CP-290 controller connected to your system, you can
give the name of the serial port that it is connected to, and that port
will be linked to /dev/x10 where the program will find it. For example,
the first serial port on your system is named "/dev/ttyS0".
     .
If you don't want to do this, just leave the answer empty.
    [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/x10/x10-1.06/debian$

well, and that is the point i cant decide wether this is my fault, or
the fault of po2debconf or debconf-updatepo. At least, po2debconf should
print some kind of note why it happily ignores the other pofiles. I then
tried to set a msgstr for the new msgid like that:

[..]
 #. Description
 #: ../templates:3
 msgid "Serial:"
 -msgstr ""
 +msgstr "foobarbazbla"
[..]

which seems to make po2debconf happy and it merges the translated pofile
into the templates:

    [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/x10/x10-1.06/debian$ po2debconf -v templates
NOTICE: ./po/sv.po is not in UTF-8 but iso-8859-1, converting...
NOTICE: ./po/fr.po is not in UTF-8 but ISO-8859-1, converting...
NOTICE: ./po/ja.po is not in UTF-8 but EUC-JP, converting...
    Template: x10/device
     [ .. english original ..]
    Description-cs.UTF-8: foobarbazbla
Ke kterému sériovémi pÅipojen kontrolér X-10uje jako "/dev/ttyS0".t
jméno sériového porty, ke kterému je pÅipojen. NáslednÄe na tento
port vytvoÅí symbolický odkaz /d ./x10. NapÅíklad první sériový
    port se oznaÄ
Nechcete-li nic zadávat, ponechte pole prázdné.

looking at po-files from other packages it seems to be okey for the
msgstr to be empty (at least ive found several short descriptions
which are so), so i really dont get whats going on here, TIA.

bye,
    - michael
