The reason I haven't asked for sponsorship for either of the new
upstream releases is because it is a nonpristine tarball, and I either
have to ask the sponsor to do a list of not-so-normal and nontrivial
things, to avoid them relying and trusting the "cleanliness" of my own
sourceball.

I started work on it, but gave up for now because of the complexities

.diff.gz.

Thanks for this; I'll try to include it next time I'm hacking on it.

Indeed. I don't know how often that changes.
