Source: aegisub Version: 3.2.2+dfsg-7 Severity: wishlist Hi!
As you know, upstream Aegisub/Aegisub has been inactive for years now except for one batch of fixes being merged in 2019 (and iirc even breaking the build for then-newest-stable wxWidgets 3.0 in the process). Imho it would be a god idea to switch this package’s upstream to a maintained Aegisub fork. I noticed you already considered this in 2019: https://github.com/wangqr/Aegisub/issues/13. As mentioned in the above GH issue, TypesettingTools/Aegisub was/is supposed to take over Aegisub/Aegisub eventually, but now even TypesettingTools/Aegisub has been inactive for half a year and doesn't build anymore with newest meson (see its #162). Actually maintained forks currently are wangqr/Aegisub and arch1t3cht/Aegisub. The former is one of the oldest forks of Aegisub/Aegisub and was already considered as a new upstream in 2019 and is now also used as the upstream for Void Linux’ and Arch’s aegisub packages. Maintenance is currently mostly focused on fixing bugs and commits occur every couple of months and ime bug reports tend to get a response within a few weeks. Releases continue Aegisub/Aegisub’s numbering. One can choose to build with CMake or a continuation of Aegisub/Aegisub’s custom Makefiles and autoconf configuration. The latter is rather new and based on TypesettingTools/Aegisub. It also backported some fixes and changes from wangqr/Aegisub and focuses on new features and improvements for advanced usecases. It explicitly mentions *not* being concerned with stability and itself writes „Don't use this version if you're just looking for any version of Aegisub“. It is quite active and issues are ime responded to within days. Releases are tagged as "feature_xx" starting with 01 and do not use Aegisub/Aegisub’s version numbering scheme. It is built with meson. Both intend to merge back their changes to Aegisub/Aegisub when/if it becomes active again. Personally, I have been using personal wangqr/Aegisub builds for years now, since Aegisub/Aegisub is basically unusable for my setup. But I might either switch to or backported some changes from arch1t3cht in the future, though as a package upstream arch1t3cht/Aegisub might be too fast moving. Of course ideally TypesettingTools/Aegisub would reactivate and finally take over Aegisub/Aegisub, allowing others to upstream their changes, but I’m afraid this won’t happen anytime soon. Cheers Oneric
