When modifying the Layout Options (in my case, selecting a Compose
key), Gnome crashed, dragging X with it, and sent me back
to gdm. Subsequent attempts to start Gnome (from gdm, from

This has absolutely nothing to do with gconf. It is a known bug in
the X
server, which is fixed in X11R7 (in unstable).
