Ok, I found the source of this problem.

~/.bashrc did say
> export GDK_BACKEND=wayland
for reasons I do not recall at the moment. Removing this
Variable from the environment makes emacs start properly.

How did I find out? Test with a fresh user without any of my
environment, then add files until break.

So consider this bug report invalid and close the bug.
