Oh, I found it -- it is the debian patch to scripts/mysql_create_system_tables.sh which breaks the test suite. If I revert that script to the original then everything passes. I would suggest to either: (a) leave that file alone at build time and create the debian-specific patched script at install time (when creating the debs, that is), or (b) to add a note to the README that the testsuite can't be run sucessfully with the debian patch applied Since I consider the testsuite rather valuable, I'd favor (a).
