It might also be interesting to see how it does when running in a tmpfs (or at least with /tmp on a tmpfs).
I once switched /tmp to tmpfs on one of our big hosts but ran into issues with tests that were missing file system properties that are available on regular fs, but not in tmpfs. I reverted and didn't investigate further if the trade off was still worth it. On these AWS hosts I would expect that we would be lacking memory to do this. Quite a lot of tests need rather quite some disk space.
