My thinking was to create patches which could be sent upstream as-is,
rather than specifically targetting Debian (which is why I split the
changes into two).  However, given that imlib2 has had pkg-config
support since 2003, I can't imagine upstream will mind removing the
imlib2-config stuff altogether.  I am in the process of creating a
patch-set to update the autotooling for upstream; I shall update it as
you suggest, and then update the Debian patches.
