Package: src:linux Version: 5.18.16-1 Severity: normal My home firewall/router is a Raspberry Pi 4 running arm64 buster, with a StarTech dual USB3 gigabit-ethernet dongle to give it enough network ports.
In a routine apt update, the linux-image-5.18.0-4-arm64 package was installed, and I rebooted into it. Everything appeared stable until I attempted my first video call of the day (on a different machine, of course, but with all the packets routed through the Pi), and then I suffered a network fault within about 20 seconds. Checking the kernel logs, at the time of the crash a stack trace appeared in 'dmesg' with the heading ethWORLD (ax88179_178a): transmit queue 0 timed out The full oops and crash dump is attached in oops.txt. ethWORLD is the name for my ethernet device that talks to the outside world, by speaking PPPoE to my DSL router. It's one of the two ports on the StarTech dongle I mention above. (The other one talks to my wifi, which was idle at the time, so I didn't notice whether there was any problem there.) Apparently the effect of this kernel oops was to stop any further outgoing traffic on ethWORLD. I could still receive packets (I could even hear my colleague on the video call commenting that I didn't seem to be responding), but after another minute or so, my device was unable to respond to a routine PPPoE ping from the ISP, which terminated the rest of my session. I was able to reactivate the interface without a reboot by bouncing it using ifdown/ifup. The network was stable for low traffic like SSH or reading web pages, but the crash was pretty reliably repeatable within the first few seconds of any video call I tried to participate in. A full reboot made no difference either. Reverting to the previous kernel version installed on the machine (Package: linux-image-5.18.0-3-arm64, Version: 5.18.14-1) made the problem go away. So it seems to be specific to the difference between those two kernels. (I would be happy to go through a list of kernel git commits between those two kernels and see if anything jumped out at me, but I'm sorry to say that I have no idea how to get from a Debian kernel package/version to a kernel git commit id.) -- Package-specific info: ** Version: Linux version 5.18.0-4-arm64 (debian-ker...@lists.debian.org) (gcc-11 (Debian 11.3.0-5) 11.3.0, GNU ld (GNU Binutils for Debian) 2.38.90.20220713) #1 SMP Debian 5.18.16-1 (2022-08-10) ** Command line: video=HDMI-A-1:1920x1080M@50,margin_left=48,margin_right=48,margin_top=48,margin_bottom=48 dma.dmachans=0x37f5 bcm2709.boardrev=0xc03111 bcm2709.serial=0x2ef6f1c6 bcm2709.uart_clock=48000000 bcm2709.disk_led_gpio=42 bcm2709.disk_led_active_low=0 smsc95xx.macaddr=DC:A6:32:02:19:22 vc_mem.mem_base=0x3ec00000 vc_mem.mem_size=0x40000000 console=tty0 console=ttyS1,115200 root=/dev/mmcblk1p2 rw fsck.repair=yes net.ifnames=0 rootwait ** Tainted: C (1024) * staging driver was loaded ** Kernel log: [ 10.565299] cfg80211: Loaded X.509 cert 'romain.per...@gmail.com: 3abbc6ec146e09d1b6016ab9d6cf71dd233f0328' [ 10.565705] cfg80211: Loaded X.509 cert 'sforshee: 00b28ddf47aef9cea7' [ 10.568837] platform regulatory.0: firmware: failed to load regulatory.db (-2) [ 10.568858] firmware_class: See https://wiki.debian.org/Firmware for information about missing firmware [ 10.568862] platform regulatory.0: Direct firmware load for regulatory.db failed with error -2 [ 10.568875] cfg80211: failed to load regulatory.db [ 10.625007] videodev: Linux video capture interface: v2.00 [ 10.669507] snd_bcm2835: module is from the staging directory, the quality is unknown, you have been warned.
