Dear Maintainer, It would be nice to backport this to stable. It was probably a mistake, not to include it earlier. I already installed the binary package that was ment for testing and it works fine. The only additional dependency is libwebp7. That's a brand new lib, and they are no conflicts. It seams like a painless backport.
