The /etc/mailcap file contains for jpeg:
image/jpeg; display-im6.q16 'jpeg:%s'; test=test -n "$DISPLAY"
However, some images are not correctly oriented, compared to what
I obtain with other viewers, like nomacs. The -auto-orient option
solves the issue[*] and should be used in /etc/mailcap:
image/jpeg; display-im6.q16 -auto-orient 'jpeg:%s'; test=test -n "$DISPLAY"
I don't know whether other formats need it too.
