This is an obvious toolchain bug, and it doesn't seem to be reproducible
on any platforms I have access to.

It seems to work on plummer both for gcc-11 based go and for gcc-12.  So
does it on on buildds.  Thus, it appears this is not a bug here.

This bit I can't give a meaningful response to, as I don't know the diff
between those well enough.
