Package: mozilla
Version: 2:1.7.12-1.1
Severity: important

There have been many reports (see Google) about Mozilla (and also Firefox)
hanging with almost 100% CPU usage. But is has always been unclear if the
phenomenon is real, and what really triggers it.

I have the same problem with both Firefox and Mozilla: sometimes CPU usage
goes up to 100%, the whole X system freezes, and the only remedy is to
press Control-Alt-F2 to go to the console, and to type killall mozilla-bin
(or killall firefox).

In my case this happens when I "mistype" something, i.e. when I hit some key
not squarely, hitting two keys at once. But it does not always happen, and
it is difficult to reproduce.

I now found a fairly reliable way to reproduce this.

 -start mozilla.
-put the cursor in the address window.
-hit the "A" key, but somewhat to the left, so you also engage the
  CapsLock key.

You will probably not have to try this more than 2 or 3 times before your
system freezes completely with approx. 100% CPU usage by Mozilla.

So it seems something is seriously wrong with the keyboard input code of
Mozilla.

I call this bug ‘important’ because it makes it impossible to recommend a
Linux/Mozilla system to an inexperienced user.

Regards, Jan
