Package: maint-guide Version: 1.2.6 Severity: normal
Hi! Section _4.2 `copyright' file_ talks about debian/copyright, but seems to suggest bad practices. Actually the Reject FAQ[1] states: | Your debian/copyright file must have at least the minimum needed | stuff. A good overview of what you need is in this thread[2] The referred to thread shows examples of how *not* to write a debian/copyright file, as well as example of how to write one. Unfortunately the example presented in the New Maintainer Guide as a model, is somewhere in the middle, but seems to be almost closer to bad examples, than to good ones. For instance, it fails to state which version of the GPL the packaged software is released under ("v1 or later", "v2 or later", "v1 only", v2 only", ...). This is noted by Roland Stigge[3], but does not seem to be fixed yet. I think that this New Maintainer's Guide section should be improved. A good mini-howto on debian/copyright writing can be found in the reply by Andrew Suffield[4] and in a more recent message by Joerg Jaspert to debian-devel-announce[5].
