I have tried the author's (Kovid Goyal) recommendation of installing his official binaries and that does indeed remedy this error, but now calibre fails to run due to apparent issues with the Debian environment. This application failed to start because no Qt platform plugin could be initialized. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.
