You're misunderstanding that message: "Avahi mDNS/DNS-SD Stack" is just a description of avahi-daemon (Avahi is an implementation of the mDNS and DNS-SD protocols). Avahi doesn't require libnss-mdns, but libnss-mdns requires Avahi. This looks like the same issue as <http://bugs.debian.org/856311> so I'm reassigning it. Workaround: edit /etc/avahi/avahi-daemon.conf and comment out all the lines starting with "rlimit-". smcv
